*The tough competition at the WRAL Invitational is well worth the long trip to Raleigh.

*By finishing in the top ten, Enka will receive an invitation to the 2008 WRAL Inv.

*Top finishers were:  Daniel Ownbey (1st), Joe Shively (2nd), Justin Guthrie (2nd), and Daniel Jarvis (6th).  Owen Halbach was one win away from placing in the top six.

*Joe Shively defeated 2x SC state champion Trey Alley in the semifinals. 

*Justin Guthrie's only loss was to defending NC state champion Mike Williams.

*Depth was huge in this match.  Backup wrestlers Brent Thomas and Jordan Ownbey both won their matches.  Both teams were not at full strength for the match.

*There was a huge crowd in the N. Buncombe gym, one of the largest I've ever seen for a non-playoff high school dual match in WNC.

*Finals match against NW Whitfield came down to the last match.  From start to finish, this was a great dual meet with lots of pins and excitement.  Outstanding effort by Joe Shively, who moved up to 135 and wrestled a GA state qualifier to give us a chance to win the match.

*Undefeated wrestlers (5-0):  Colton Waugh (119), Daniel Ownbey (125), Joe Shively (130), Xan Warfield (145).  Joe Shively pinned his opponents in all five of his bouts.

*Morehead avenged last year's loss to Enka by winning 35-30 in the finals.  Great finals match which was described as "a rock concert environment."  Fans were into the match and the action was outstanding.

* Our first trip to Georgia was quite an adventure.  Driving the bus through rush hour Atlanta traffic was challenging to say the least.

*If it were not for travel challenges and officiating, the tournament was great.  Outstanding competition, lots of matches, and great hospitality from Whitewater HS.

*Joe Shively and Matt Brock were our lone champions.  Daniel Ownbey lost his first match of the season to a Georgia state champ and Justin Guthrie lost a close match that came down to the last second.

* Overall, 13 wrestlers finished in the top 8 and Enka finished second to Harrison, GA, which placed second in the 5A Georgia State Dual Tournament.

* Fourth consecutive MAC tournament championship for Enka. (2005 tournament cancelled due to snow.)

* Tight team race with North Buncombe.  Team title was clinched after 171 lb. finals match.

* First conference championship for Daniel Ownbey.  2nd conference championship for Daniel Jarvis.  Third conference title for Joe Shively and Justin Guthrie.

Team Finish:  3rd Place - 115 points

*Four Enka Wrestlers qualify for the state tournament:  Daniel Ownbey, Joe Shively, Daniel Jarvis,

    and Justin Guthrie.

*This year's regional included the addition of 10 teams from the North Piedmont Conference, making the Western Regional much more competitive than in previous years.

*Joe Shively, Daniel Ownbey, and Justin Guthrie were regional champions.  Guthrie is now a 2x regional champion and a 3x state qualifier.  Shively is now a 3x state qualifier.  Ownbey and Jarvis are now 2x state qualifiers.

*Hunter Bennett missed qualifying for states by only one point. 

 3A State Individual Tournament

Location:  LJVM Coliseum - Winston-Salem

Format:  Individual Tournament / 74 Teams

Placement:  Top 6

Team Finish:  7th Place - 54.5 points

*Second consecutive top-ten finish for Enka. 

*Daniel Ownbey (2nd), Justin Guthrie (3rd), and Joe Shively (5th) each earn all-state honors.

*Guthrie is now a 2x state place winner (3, 3).  Shively is now a 3x state place winner (4, 5, 5)

*Shively and Ownbey both return next season.
